3.33 million cruise passengers will transit through the Port of Civitavecchia in 2024; these are the forecasts for the new year that confirms Civitavecchia as the first port in Italy and second in Europe, behind just Barcelona.

"What comes out of the analysis of flows in individual ports put together by the Risposte Turismo in its Cruise Special 2024. This year, 13.8 million passengers are expected to be welcomed in Italy (a small +0.1 percent over 2023) and more than 5,200 calls by cruise ships (+6 percent) in 60 Italian ports (in 2022 there were 61).

Looking at individual ports of call, a more varied picture of the situation emerges. Some ports, in fact, the report says, should achieve an increase in traffic, such as Civitavecchia (+0.5 percent passengers over 2023), Naples (+3 percent) and Palermo (+6.4 percent). For others, the situation appears less bright.

For 2024, therefore, the port of Rome continues to be at the top of the Italian ranking with 3.33 million passengers, recording a substantial stability compared to 2023 and an increase in ship calls of 8.2 percent (to 875).

In the Mediterranean, moreover, Civitavecchia has for years been in second place, in the top 20 ports of call, after Barcelona. In 2023 the port of Barcelona totaled 3.56 million passengers compared to 3.31 at the Italian port.

The 2024, then, predictably will also see the Spanish port at the top spot.

Back to the Italian ranking, in second position is Naples, which will reach 1.7 million passengers (in 2023 there were 1.65 million), according to the report, equivalent to a growth of 3 percent; and ship calls will rise by 3.4 percent (to 461).

Genoa, which was behind Civitavecchia in 2023, will lose one position in 2024 dropping to third place with -11.7% as to passengers (to 1.5 million) and -10.3% in ship calls (to 305).

They are followed in fourth place by Palermo, which is expected to exceed 1 million passengers (+6.4%) for the first time in 2024 with 245 ship calls; and Livorno, which will mark +25.4% in cruise passengers (to 800 thousand) and +30.4% in ship calls (to 377).

In absolute terms, the largest changes should be recorded in three ports of call: one is precisely Livorno and the others Cagliari and Messina, with +160 thousand, +150 thousand and +125 thousand passenger movements, respectively."
