The Marathon of the Mediterranean disembarks at Civitavecchia!

Our port has actually won the competition over Genoa and Palermo and will hold the first stage in Italy of the Marathon of the Mediterranean.

The event, on its 1st edition, will take place from October, 31 to November, 7 throughout the Cruise of the MSC Preziosa, flagship of MSC Cruises that will set sail from Genoa to reach the Port of Civitavecchia on November, 1.

The first stage of the competition will consist on a 10.6 km race leaving and arriving to Piazza della Vita. The race itinerary will wind through our Historic Port first around the Fort Michelangelo then along the Dock of the Rock within the wonderful setting provided by the city walls built by Urban VIII with the Vanvitelli Fountain and the huge Porta Livorno to welcome the athletes.

Once outside the Port, close to Largo della Pace, the athletes will enter back into the city center running through Via del Lazzaretto, Via Antonio da Sangallo, Via Risorgimento, Via Francesco Crispi until joining the Marina promenade and getting to Piazza della Vita.

The start will be given by Giancarlo Peris, last torch-bearer at Rome's Olympic games in 1960. Here's the itinerary of the first stage!

THE ROUTE OF THE MSC PREZIOSA AND THE OTHER STAGES OF THE MARATHON

The second stage of the marathon will take place by night on November, 4 at Palma de Mallorca where athletes will take on the longest stretch (21 km) starting from Parc de la Mar.

Finally, the third and last stage is scheduled for November, 4 and it will start at the port of Valencia through the splendid park of Jardín del Turia.

SPORT, HOLIDAYS, INNOVATION AND SOLIDARITY

The Marathon of the Mediterranean is a unique event that combines sport, well-being, holidays, innovation and solidarity.

Actually, the initiative, organized by tour operator Jacktravel with the sponsorship of Coni and the Italian Federation of Athletics, includes also some space for medical aspects, both from the clinical and the nutritional point of view.

On board will take place some debates and practical displays regarding sport traumatology, with the cooperation of important foot doctors that will show the latest innovations on orthopedic soles usage. There will also be space for nutritional implications of a correct physical activity also in this case with shows by well-known doctors.

In addition, in each one of the three stages 6 runners will be chosen to wear Google Glasses so to record the race and check in real time their biometric information on their own viewer. The three best videos will be awarded during the Final Ceremony that will take place in the big theater of MSC Preziosa the last night of navigation, before going back to Genoa.

Finally, part of the proceeds will be given to the support of 2 solidarity projects: the first is about Polio Plus, an international program of Rotary International that has to date contributed with donations of up to €1.2 billion that have allowed to immunize from the polio over 2 billion children in 122 countries; the second project is the vaccination campaign managed in cooperation with Unicef and that has freed over the years an increasingly number of countries from the virus.

HOW TO GET THERE

By car
- from North: from Strada Statale E80 enter SS1/E25 and follow directions to Interporto/Sardegna/Civitavecchia centro.
- from South: from A12/E80 exit at Civitavecchia Nord and continue to via Terme di Traiano following directions to Civitavecchia centro.

Public transports

Getting to Piazza della Vita by public transport is a piece of cake! If yo ucome to Civitavecchia by train, you just need to get off at the station and continue on foot along Viale Garibaldi (on the sea side) for about 1 km. It's impossible to miss it: behind the square you will glimpse the imposing outline of the Fort Michelangelo.
