Aida Nova, the first cruise ship with dual propulsion, arrived yesterday at the port of Civitavecchia. The ship can be powered by both traditional fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG)
The AdSP of the Northern Center Tyrrhenian Sea continues their "green" policy, with the objective of greater environmental and energy efficiency of the port of Civitavecchia.
In this respect, it will be applied a reduction to all ships powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and to those who will implement the on-board waste collection service, at the harbor.
The decision of giving incentives also to waste management, mainly plastics, and the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere, is meeting the efforts of the port community that seeks to promote more sustainable trades. In this sense, the AdSP will continue their path of ecological sustainability with a twofold advantage: not only for the city in environmental terms, but also for the owner - saving in terms of costs.
"The Port of Civitavecchia wants to "reward" shipowners who choose the most advanced technologies regarding the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere by ships, with incentives which reduce the costs related to waste management. LNG is included among the environmentally sustainable technologies "rewarded" - explains the president of the AdSP of the Northern Center Tyrrhenian Sea Francesco Maria Di Majo - and therefore the incentives will be applied to the new Carnival cruise ship, Aida Nova, powered by LNG which arrived today at the port of Civitavecchia and will stop weekly at the port".
"This technology, that is, this clean fuel, is an opportunity to make our sea and our coastlines increasingly clean and attractive places. Civitavecchia is one of the first ports in Italy to have adopted a similar measure, anticipating the contents of revision of the European directive PRF (Port reception facilities) on "green charging" associated with the cycle of the waste products on board of ships, with the consequent environmental benefits for the city: reduction of air pollution by 99% and CO2 reduction by 25% ," continues the president of the AdSP. "The application of these incentives has probably meant- underlines - one of the reasons why a major cruise company, such as Carnival, has chosen the Port of Civitavecchia to be the first stop for their cruise ship powered by LNG".
